Import your logbook

Bring your flights from an Excel or CSV file, check the preview and import only when you are sure.

Pilot

If your flights are already in another app or in a spreadsheet, you do not have to retype them: put them in a file and AVIOFILE reads it. You see a preview first and nothing is saved until you confirm.

Before you start

  • The file can be Excel, CSV, Word, a PDF with text, JSON or HTML. Up to 50 MB per file and 300 files at a time.
  • Photos and scans of paper pages are not read. If your logbook only exists on paper, copy the flights into the AVIOFILE template (see below), use Add entry in the Logbook (see Log a flight).
  • One import reads at most 10,000 rows: a longer logbook is imported in parts, for example one file per year.
  • If you come from MyFlightbook, LogTen Pro, ForeFlight or PILOTLOG, export your logbook as Excel or CSV from that app and upload that file.
  • The import adds entries to your personal logbook. It deletes nothing and, if you upload the same file twice, entries already there are not duplicated.

Steps

  1. Open the Logbook tab and tap the import icon at the top (Import logbook). If the logbook is empty you can tap Import logbook under the message.
  2. If you want to start from the AVIOFILE template, under Download the template tap Excel or CSV, fill it in with your flights and save it. The template is read with no doubts.
  3. Under Your file tap Choose files and select the file (or files). Add more files adds more; Remove file takes one out. If a file is not suitable the app says so (for example if it is empty, too big or a scan).

Start the reading

  1. Tap Read my logbook and keep the app open until the upload is finished.
  2. Wait for the reading: you see the stages Uploading your files, Opening your files, Understanding columns and rows up to Ready to check. You can tap Back to the logbook: the reading goes on and in the Logbook you find the Import in progress card, from which you reopen it.
  3. If the reading fails you see The import could not be completed, with the reason. Tap Retry, or Discard this import to give up.

Check the preview

The Check before importing screen sums up what was read: Rows found, To import, Already present, Rows with problems, Period, Flight time and, if any, Simulator time.

If a file cannot be read

If a file cannot be read, the preview shows a notice with the file name and the reason, and the file is marked Not readable. The possible reasons are:

  • "This is a program or a script, not a logbook."
  • "This archive expands to an enormous size, so it was refused for safety."
  • "The file is damaged, or it is not really the type its name says."
  • "The file is empty."
  • "The file did not arrive. Upload it again."
  • "No table with flights was found in the file."

The other files are read all the same. If no file can be read you cannot import: replace the file and try again.

Date format

If the dates can be read in two ways (for example 03/04/2025) the app does not go on until you choose Day/month/year or Month/day/year under Date format.

Columns

Under Columns there is a row for every file (or sheet) read, with "Rows read … · with problems …" and the label Recognized or Edited by you.

  1. Tap the file or sheet to see its columns, each with an example. Check that every column is read as the right thing.
  2. Tap a column to change it: "What is …?" lets you choose its meaning. With Don't import this column you ignore it.
  3. For time columns you can say how times are written (Decimal hours (1.4), h:mm (1:25), Minutes (85), Text (1h25)) or leave Detect automatically.
  4. Under Columns we did not read you find the ignored ones: if one holds your data, tap it and choose what it is.
  5. If the file has several sheets, the Import this sheet switch decides whether to read or skip it.

Automatic corrections

While reading the file AVIOFILE fixes small things: extra spaces, registrations not written in the standard way, differently written times, swapped day and month, two-digit years, flights past midnight, repeated rows.

  1. Open Automatic corrections to see what was changed, with the value before and after.
  2. If a correction is wrong tap Undo: the value from your file is kept. Undo all undoes all of them and Restore brings them back.

Totals check

If the file contains the page totals of your paper logbook, Totals check compares them with what AVIOFILE read: "Your logbook says … — we read … ✓" when it matches, or the difference.

  • If all of them match, great.
  • If a total does not match, some rows of those pages may be missing or misread: check them in the rows.
  • If the file has no page totals, the app says so and the check is not done.

Rows

Under Rows open Rows to check (with the filters All, To check, Errors, Duplicates, Excluded) or All rows.

  1. Tap a row to see the Row details. Flags are for example Ambiguous date, Future date, Times don't add up, Uncertain reading or Already present.
  2. Edit values changes the data; Leave this row out leaves it out and Include this row brings it back; Undo my edits goes back to the value that was read.
  3. Rows already in the logbook or equal to another row of the file are duplicates and are not imported twice.

Opening balance

If the file contains an opening balance (hours already flown before the logbook starts), the Import the opening balance too switch adds it as a single entry. Leave it off if the earlier flights are in the file too.

Import

  1. At the bottom tap Import N flights.
  2. In the Import into your logbook? dialog check how many entries will be added, the period and how many rows are left out, then tap Import.
  3. At the end you see the result, for example "12 flights imported", and how many were already in the logbook or were skipped.

If you no longer want to import, tap Discard this import at the bottom of the screen and confirm with Discard: nothing is added to the logbook (flights already imported stay).

Frequently asked questions

Can I import a photo of my logbook?

No. Photos and scans are not read: use the AVIOFILE template, or export your logbook from your app as Excel or CSV.

I imported the same file twice: are there duplicates?

No, entries already present are recognized and not added again.

I see "You have too many open imports".

You can have at most 30 open imports, that is, not yet imported and not discarded. Import or discard (Discard this import) the ones you no longer need, then try again.

I see "You have started too many imports in the last 30 days".

You can start at most 100 imports in 30 days. Try again later, or put your flights in fewer files.

The file has more than 10,000 rows.

Each import accepts up to 10,000 rows. Split the file by year (one file per year, for example) and import the parts one at a time: entries already present are not duplicated.
